Blue bedroom ideas are a longtime favorite for coastal locales and boys’ bedrooms, but the versatile hue can actually be taken in any direction, according to Sarah Montgomery of Sarah Montgomery Interiors in Chicago. In a large room, for example, the AD PRO Member thinks a mid-tone blue paint might be your best bet. The trick to selecting the right blue paint color, according to experts like Montgomery, is making sure it has enough gray in it. Beyond paint, blue furniture, blue bedroom rugs, blue wallpaper, and more can infuse the space with a pop of cerulean, navy, or turquoise beauty. Whether you’re looking to give your sleeping quarters a modern, minimalist makeover or color drench your bedroom in a dramatic royal blue, keep reading for blue bedroom decorating ideas that will envelop you in the calming atmosphere of the sky and sea.

Opt for an immersive wall treatment
A custom-made tapestry of the Bay of Naples dominates the primary suite of designer Allegra Hicks’s penthouse in the Italian city. The bed, featuring a headboard and bed skirt fashioned from fabric found at Istanbul’s Grand Bazaar, is dressed with an ikat pillow by the Rug Company, a coverlet made from vintage toile de Jouy, and a cashmere throw by Loro Piana. PS: Yes, embracing a blue maximalist ethos is A-okay. While paint, accessories, wallpaper, or other wall treatments can help bring in small doses of blue, experts like Alykhan Velji Designs creative director Alukah Velji encourage a full embrace of the hue: “I love fully enveloping a space in blue to create a true sanctuary.”

Balanced blue
Inside a historic Brooklyn brownstone reimagined by Nick Olsen, two of the homeowners’ children share a room lined with a Sandberg wallpaper from Stark; the Fine Arts Furniture trundle beds are dressed with RH bedding. Per Velji, colorful accents in the throw pillows help brighten up the space—and we wholeheartedly agree. Ample natural light via large windows also helps balance the darker hues of this blue bedroom design idea.

Mix-and-match blues with whites and beiges
Blue hues and creamy accents abound in fashion entrepreneur Christopher Burch’s Hamptons guest room, designed by Christopher Maya. “Blue is highly versatile and pairs beautifully with a range of complementary colors,” says Ellie Stein, owner of Stein Studio Interior Design in San Francisco and Birmingham, Alabama. “For a serene space, soft neutrals like whites and creamy beiges create a peaceful backdrop that allows the blue to stand out,” she adds, as is the case in this blue haven.

Give coastal design a nod
The primary bedroom of this Andrew Raquet–designed Bahamas beach house took shape around an Alan Campbell wallpaper. Integrate hushed hues to inspire relaxation
“Layer lighter and darker blues with neutrals, like crisp white, soft beige, or cool gray, to amplify the calming effect with a clean, contemporary feel,” says Jen Baxter, founder of Baxter Hill Interiors in Bucks County, Pennsylvania. The calm and clean atmosphere of the palette comes through in droves in the pale blue bedroom of this Hamptons home by Robert A.M. Stern Architects and designer Steven Gambrel.

Pair blues with greens
AD PRO designer Alexandra Kaehler of Alexandra Kaehler Design in Chicago believes that blue can often read cool, and lack a coziness, so she likes to temper it with something warmer—like soft greens—when using integrating the hue into a bedroom. “When paired with other colors, accents of navy can be sophisticated and not overwhelm the space,” she says of this ethereal bedroom.

Make it matte
Tara McCauley of her eponymous New York City design firm believes that popular opinion tends to show a bias toward pale blues for a bedroom, but she finds that a deeper, more saturated blue can actually be quite beautiful in sleeping quarters. “It’s a bit counterintuitive, but in a small space, a dark blue (in a matte finish) can absorb light rather than reflect it, making the walls feel like they are receding and creating a sense that the room is bigger than it is,” says the AD PRO member. She recommends pairing a matte blue wall with a glossy accent. like lacquered furniture or polished leather upholstery, for an elegant contrast in textures. If you’re designing around a deep navy blue bedroom idea, McCauley recommends cherry red and a bold chartreuse green, as seen in this playful yet sophisticated space.

Go all-in on blue for guest rooms
“A rested guest is a happy guest. Your guest room should be as luxe and comfortable as your room,” says AD PRO designer Erin Sander of Erin Sander Design in Dallas. Luxe and comfy are certainly in the design brief for this divine by guest room by Sander. “Choose a wall color that is unique, relaxing and memorable at the same time. Who wouldn’t want to sleep in this gorgeous indigo plaster oasis?” says Sander.

Lean into a Mediterranean aesthetic
Kshama Shah, owner and principal designer of House of Design in Newark, California, bet big on coastal Mediterranean style in this space. A brick accent wall drenched in deep sea blue—the signature shade of many Mediterranean locales—commands attention in this blue bedroom. “Light wood tones for the bed frame along with walnut side tables anchor and ground the space,” she says, noting that she also incorporated crisp white linen and yellow bedding to enhance the relaxing atmosphere of the bedroom. Natural home decor elements like a faux olive plant, rattan baskets, and light blue ceramic side lamps round out the organic seaside vibe.

Tap into grasscloth
This blue and white bedroom idea shines thanks to the addition of some grasscloth wallpaper that ties the two colors together. Velji appreciates how this feature wall in a firewood grasscloth adds a beautiful layer to this playful bedroom. This is not your typical bedroom look, as it’s filled with midcentury-inspired pieces and bold color choices, he adds.

Pay homage to nature
Doesn’t this look like the perfect place to curl up on a cold winter day? Blue and white is a classic palette that lends itself to plenty of different themes and interpretations, says New York and Boston-based interior designer Gary McBournie. For the guest room of his Montana house (featuring furniture styling by David Murphy), the AD PRO member “pulled natural colors from Big Sky” to pair with the timeless palette.

Select a full spectrum of blues
“This primary bedroom uses a wide range of blues, warm gray, and black to form the basis for the palette,” says Elle Cantrell, owner and lead designer of Elle Du Monde in Atlanta. “We paired bold draperies and velvet pillows against the more subdued shades of blue on the walls and rug,” says Cantrell, illustrating that there’s no need to limit oneself to one shade of blue. If you’re incorporating a showstopper piece, like this carved four-poster bed, Cantrell suggests keeping the surrounding decor simple to avoid competition.

Dig into color drenching
For this large bedroom’s walls, Montgomery thought white might read too stark and instead opted for a grayish-blue-green to soften the space. “We also painted the wall of closet doors, built-in cabinetry, and trim a slightly different shade of blue,” she says. Warm tones were introduced via wood, leather, olive, and salmon fabrics to offset the coolness of the walls. To make sure you end up with the most livable shade of blue, Montgomery recommends putting large samples up and looking at them over several days in different lights; the right blue that won’t look too pastel or infantile and will likely be in the gray section of the paint deck, she notes.

Let the wallpaper guide your palette
“At times, people are nervous to commit to color on their walls,” says Sarah Kuchar, owner and creative director of Kuchar Studio in Chicago. “Wall coverings can add a nice buffer between light and dark within one print.” The designer notes that if you pick a wall coloring (like the one pictured here) with a varied palette, you can pull out certain shades to guide you in determining the color scheme for the rest of the room’s decor, e.g. white in this space’s linens and bedding are a cohesive fit here as they appear in the wallpaper.

Think longterm with your nursery
Paula Dixon of Paula Dixon Design in Houston and her firm designed this boy’s bedroom when he was a baby with future growth in mind, eliminating the need for a major remodel. “We used blue on the walls to help with tranquility and a playful patterned accent wall wallpaper that reminds us of driving in various patterns, tying into the wall display of vintage cars,” comments Dixon. Her pro tip when designing a nursery or child’s bedroom? “Think of a theme that is intentional and can be cherished for years to come,” she says.

Befriend blue shiplap
White oak dominates this bunk room in the mountain home of Chicago-based Rebel House creative director and designer Marli Jones, so the design team cloaked the area where the two bunks meet in cool, blue-green painted shiplap to add depth and atmosphere. “The coolness of the blue is warmed by the golden tone of the white oak bed frames and the texture of the Holly Hunt wall covering,” Jones explains. The custom pillows are made with a black-green Geiger Alpaca velvet.

Bet on blue statement furniture
If you’re in search of soothing blue bedroom ideas, Stein recommends you start by selecting a statement piece in a soft blue, like a dresser or accent chair. “It is important to keep the rest of your palette neutral to maintain balance and ensure your design is not overwhelming,” she says, further noting that you can layer in complementary colors (like greens or warm wood tones) through accessories, furniture, or plants. “Finally, choose varied amounts of texture, like crisp linens, a textured rug, and a few plush pillows to maintain an approachable and welcoming feel,” says Stein.

Consider contrasting accent colors
If you’re in search of a blue bedroom idea featuring an unexpected juxtaposition, you can’t go wrong with peachy hues. “This bold blue-and-white guest bedroom speaks to its location in tropical Boca Raton,” says designer Shani Core, nodding to the palm wallpaper and punchy palette of the space. Here, Core and her colleagues at Palm Beach Gardens, Florida–based firm Shani Core Interiors brought in touches of coral via throw pillows and a cozy throw for contrast. The natural wood of the bed frame, lamp, and nightstand tone down the color saturation and bring a calming, coastal feeling to this fun blue guest bedroom.

Make it monochromatic
Montgomery thinks of this room’s design brief as “cozy gastropub;” we call it “serenity achieved.” This blue bedroom design adheres to monochromatic principles, but with added depth through indigo grasscloth, wood, and textured fabrics. “We highlighted the original plaster trim by painting that and the ceiling gray, which doesn't compete with the blue or create a stark contrast like leaving it white would have,” says Montgomery, noting that the team also added curtains in a similar shade of dark blue, but with varying textures to keep the dark room from feeling too flat. Word to the wise: If you’re ready to commit to a dark blue paint color, consider painting the trim and ceiling that same hue, says Montgomery.

Lighten up
If you’re looking for light blue bedroom ideas, look no further. In this home, the pale blue bedroom walls provide a grounding effect, harmonizing the overall palette, says James Yarosh of James Yarosh Associates in Holmdel, New Jersey. “Blue bedrooms can be serene with lighter hues and dramatic when dark and moody. Muted versions of the primary colors—red, blue, and yellow—create a soothing and balanced atmosphere,” says Yarosh, adding that removing any one of these colors from the design could disrupt the visual balance and harmony.

Weave in warm tones
In this coastal Savannah, Georgia, bedroom, Baxter selected Georgian Revival Blue by Sherwin Williams to blend classical elegance with modern design. “The room embraces deep blue walls as a dramatic canvas, layered with contrasting mustard pillows, caramel leather, and wood furniture to add warmth, coziness and depth,” she elaborates, pointing out that the abstract artwork above the bed pulls together the blue hues with hints of warm, earthy neutrals.

Design a blue accent wall with unexpected texture
“The vertical slat detail on the headboard wall is a stunning modern statement,” says Velji, adding that the teal blue shade of the accent wall gives it an “unexpected and different” spin. The color plays well off an eclectic mix of furniture and accessories, helping to create a handsomely curated space.

Incorporate timeless blue-and-white stripes
Blue-and-white stripes are classic for a reason. “For our main guest room in our Nantucket home, we paired bold blue drapery from John Robshaw with a checkered quilt and tailored bed linens from Pioneer Linens,” says McBournie of this space, styled by Howard Christian. “As part of our renovation, we added several windows to this room for a nice, bright feeling, as if you are in a garden while you’re in bed.”

Make blue the focal color for kids room
Gone are the days when a blue color palette is strictly reserved for boys’ rooms. If you’re in need of a soothing color scheme for a kids’ room makeover, regardless of who will be using it most, don’t shy away from blue. “This bedroom serves as a guest retreat for both boys and girls, so a palette of blues with a touch of sea glass was a natural fit,” says Core, noting that the Suzani window treatment fabric informed the design with at least six different shades of blues and greens. “From the custom bedding to the vintage chaise reupholstered in navy performance fabric with Robin’s egg ribbon trim and cobalt mirrors above each headboard, this children’s guest bedroom is a cozy haven with lots of blue personality,” she says. Also, aren’t you swooning for that whimsical vintage blue-and-white elephant side table?

Play with plush textures
Cheryl Clendenon of the In Detail Interiors team in Pensacola, Florida, says her designers revved up the texture in this space with a dusty blue pearlescent woven wall covering to create a contemporary feeling that was still cozy. They also “layered in furniture and soft goods that offered hits of blue in different levels of intensity,” she says, noting that the woven bed frame gave a more casual touch that then translated to the mixed textiles in the bedding, and shag accent rug. “Note that none of these colors are a traditional tone of blue—and the ochre yellows and little hit of orange make the blue feel that much more bold. Find materials with infused punches of the color you love and let that be the direction for your color palette,” says Clendenon.
What colors go with blue in a bedroom?
You have a lot of color palette leeway when it comes to finding complementary colors in a blue bedroom. Kuchar personally loves mixing in warm pops of rust or camel with blues, as they can come off very neutral and add an interesting contrast. “If your blues go a bit more green in tone, adding an olive pop in pillows or art creates a nice accent,” she adds.
Is dark blue or light blue more popular?
When it comes to trends in blue bedroom decorating ideas, Montgomery predicts we’ll continue to see fewer light cool blues than lean gray in 2025 as people embrace warmer mid-tone blues and blue-greens, as well as color drenching (which refers to a technique in which one color or a group of similar hues comprise the entire space of a room from furniture to paint to decor). “I also think a dark blue bedroom is timeless if the saturation is right, and if it’s not paired with the stark contrast of white trim,” she says.
For some, light blue may be reminiscent of nursery spaces for boys or young kids’ rooms, so be careful to keep the overall mood mature when using baby blue copiously in retreats for adults.
Are blue bedrooms trending in 2025?
Montgomery believes that a dark blue bedroom remains timeless. That’s the beauty of blue: No matter the style of the space or home, you can make a blue bedroom dark, moody and cozy or light, fresh and serene, she says.
