.: Welcome to our site

This is the site for the Illinois Prairie Chapter of the Ikenobo Ikebana Society of America. Here you will find information on our chapter including workshops, newsletters, and membership information.

Our purpose is to foster, develop, and enhance the avocation of the Ikenobo Ikebana School of Flower Arranging. Through the flower way, by carefully observing how plants grow and arranging ikebana, we discover new relationships with nature, others and ourselves. Our membership is diverse, with local members, those from out of state, from different countries and cultures, men and women.

We hope you enjoy your visit and that you can join us at one of our events.

.: A brief history

The Illinois Prairie Chapter of the Ikenobo Ikebana Society of America was founded in March of 1991 by Professor Kimiko Gunji. We became a chartered chapter in the Ikenobo Ikebana Society of America in May of 1997. Professor Gunji is the director of Japan House and is a professor of the Ikenobo Ikebana School in Japan. She holds a teaching certificate from the Hanayagi School of Classical Dance, and has received Tea name Soki from the Urasenke Tea Ceremony School.

Illinois Prairie Chapter meets once a month at the University of Illinois Japan House, located at 2000 South Lincoln Ave. in Urbana. We meet on a Saturday morning from 9 to noon. Parking is available in the lot directly south of Japan House. At each workshop a certified Ikenobo instructor will lecture and demonstrate on a specific style. Afterwards participants arrange, and the instructor critiques each individual arrangement. In addition to our regular Saturday morning workshops, our chapter hosts a professor from Japan once a year for a series of workshops. Illinois Prairie Chapter also sponsors activities associated with Japan House, ikebana, and other Japanese arts.
